Get Your Dog Microchipped

From March 31st 2016, all dogs over twelve weeks old must be microchipped and most importantly registered on an approved database.  This is a two step integrated process and having your dog microchipped alone is not enough; you must also register your dog and keep your contact details up to date.

The microchipping scheme is a simple way of reuniting owners with lost or stolen pets. It will relieve the pressure on animal charities and dog pounds by significantly reducing the amount of time they need to house dogs while the owner is located. It will also protect the welfare of dogs by promoting responsible dog ownership. It can also be used to locate owners where a dog has been involved in worrying livestock or other unacceptable behaviours.

An Garda Siochana, Local Authorities and the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine will be responsible for enforcing this law. Vets will also be asked to remind owners of their responsibility to microchip their dogs.    Those who refuse to microchip and register their dogs could face a fine of up to £5,000 per animal.  For more information see PAC NEWS
