National Marts Farm Safety Awareness & Remembrance Week

PAC Ireland is happy to support National Marts Farm Safety Awareness and Remembrance Week.  207 people were killed in farming accidents between 2009 and 2018 and 15 people have already lost their lives this year. Every fatal farm accident has a devastating effect on family, friends and the wider community. Farmer operators rely heavily on tractors, vehicles and machinery to get work done quickly and effectively.  But the high fatality rate proves they are also hazardous if not operated in a safe manner.

51% of all fatal farm accidents involve vehicles and machinery. Most of these  as a result of somebody being crushed or struck by tractor or machine. The majority of accidents with tractors and machinery are caused by inexperienced operators, poor mechanical condition, excessive speed, lack of concentration, steep gradients and unguarded parts.

National Marts Farm Safety Awareness and Remembrance Week is a time to remember and reflect on those who have been lost to a farming accident. It is also a week to promote safety awareness and reignite farmers’ commitment to farm safety.

Tractors/vehicles and machinery should be maintained in good condition, adequately guarded and only operated in a safe manner by competent people.

Always ensure:
Tractors are maintained in good working condition
All controls are in good working order and clearly marked
Brakes are checked regularly and are always in sound working condition
All controls are in good working order and clearly marked
All relevant guards are in place
PTO and hydraulics are functioning correctly
Mirrors, lights and wipers are in working order at all times
The tractor is always parked safely
