PAC at Round Table Meeting with Ministers

Minister Pat Breen, with responsibility for safety in the workplace, along with Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed, hosted a round table meeting at the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.  Major stakeholders were invited to put forward proposals on how to tackle the increasing number of accidents and fatalities in the agricultural sector.  On the day attendees were told that already this year twelve lives had been lost in the farming sector.  Stakeholders put forward recommendations ranging from more legislation to scrappage schemes to peer mentoring.  Tom Murphy (for PAC Ireland) said that as over half of all agricultural injuries and fatalities are linked to tractors and machinery, some financial assistance for farmers towards regular testing of tractors would help ensure that all tractors, whatever their age, would be safe to operate.
