Ploughing 2017

h-s-demoAttending the first day of this years Ploughing Championships was a wise decision, it was a fine day with the rain staying away for the crowd of around 112,500. Helping out at the Safety Village I saw huge crowds taking an avid interest in the activity in the safety demonstration arena. The dramatic demonstration featuring a straw man caught in the PTO was shockingly graphic and this was followed by a hard hitting presentation by Peter Gohery.  Peter lost a leg, sustained serious injury in his other leg and broke several bones in his body in farming accident involving an inadequately guarded PTO.  He didn’t hold back when describing how his accident affected him at every level of his life.  We also saw demonstrations on the safe use of a bale grab, working at height and ATV vehicles, with the Order of Malta ambulance crew showing how to deal with the victim of an ATV overturning accident.  Also very popular all day was the free blood pressure testing facility provided by Irish Heart volunteers.
